Ethiopian Electric Power has announced that issues in its system caused a nationwide blackout in a large part of the country on Thursday.

According to the BBC, only the city of Bahir Dar, located in the country’s north-west, and its surrounding area did not experience the power outage, which began around 15:40 local time.

The company confirmed in a statement that power was “completely cut off” in all parts of the country but did not disclose the issues that affected the system, leading to the blackout.

It also stated on its Facebook page that an investigation is underway to ascertain what actually caused the blackout.

The company later updated that power has now been restored in Addis Ababa, and some other parts of the country hours after.

It, therefore, appealed for patience from its customers while they try to reconnect the country’s power grid.
