INEC to convene emergency meeting over attacks on facilities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will convene an emergency meeting to address attacks on its facilities in some parts of the country.
The announcement came amid the Abia police command’s disclosure that it has commenced “full investigation” into Sunday’s fire at the Ohafia office of INEC.
In a statement on Monday, Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, stated that the commission would convene an emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to discuss the attacks on its offices in some parts of the country.
Mr Okoye stated that the electoral body recently renovated the burnt facility.
On Monday, the police spokesman in Abia, Godfrey Ogbonna, said available information showed that miscreants carried out the attack.
Mr Ogbonna added that the assailants attacked the facility at about 10:00 p.m. on Sunday.
“The people in the neighbourhood said the attack was carried out by unknown miscreants.
“There was no casualty because security men guarding the office ran into the 14 Army Brigade barracks for safety when the attackers arrived at the place,” he said.
According to Mr Ogbonna, the miscreants were, however, repelled through the combined efforts of the police and army.
The attackers razed the building, destroying electronic gadgets, official documents, and furniture.
