Nigerians plunged into darkness as power grid collapses fifth time

Nigeria has been plunged into darkness following a power outage as its national power grid collapses for the fifth time in 2024.
Some areas across the nation reported that the outage took place around 2:00 a.m. while others experienced the outage around 7:00 a.m.
Data obtained by Business Day from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), revealed that the grid, as of the time, was at 629.90 megawatts by past 10:00 a.m. Monday, and just 172.00MW around 7:00 a.m.
The nationwide blackout was said to have lasted for about five hours before power was restored in some parts of the country.
The spokesman of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, did not immediately respond to inquiry by Peoples Gazette about the cause of the grid collapse.
Electricity distribution companies have yet to make any official statement concerning the situation.
The national grid collapse came weeks after the subsidy on power was removed, which witnessed a 300 per cent electricity tarrif hike for Band A customers.
