Seven killed, many injured after race car rams into spectators in Sri Lanka
At least seven people were killed and 21 others injured after a race car rammed into spectators at a motorsports event in Sri Lanka on Sunday.
According to the BBC, the accident occurred at the Fox Hill Supercross race in the army town of Diyatalawa yesterday. Four race officials and three spectators, including an eight-year-old, were killed.
Five of the victims died at the scene; two were declared dead at the hospital, while many others remained in critical condition.
The crash was reportedly caused after a car overturned another car on the army-owned track.
Officials had tried to slow down cars around the initial crash site by waving yellow lights, but one of the speeding cars ran off course and rammed into spectators on the side of the unguarded track.
The police have arrested two drivers, and authorities said a full investigation into the crash is underway. The condition of the drivers remains unclear.
“This accident happened when the car jumped out of the running lane,” police spokesman Nihal Talduwa was quoted by BBC Sinhala as saying.
