Fire breaks out at MMIA, flight operations diverted to D-Wing

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has said there was a fire outbreak on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
The Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, in a statement, said following the incident, flight operations have been diverted to the D Wing of the facility.
Mrs Orah, in the statement said, “05:29 hrs, smoke was detected billowing from the E54 Bridge, leading electrical engineers to immediately cut off power to the entire E Wing. The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services team was quick to respond, arriving at the scene by 05:30 hrs.’’
She said the emergency responders suspected that the outbreak was caused by “sparks from an electrical unit,” assuring that”a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.”
“The incident, which had escalated into a fire, was brought under control by 06:41 hrs. Efforts to ventilate the smoke from the building are in progress,” she added.
This comes just two days after flights were diverted from the local airport to the international terminal, following a runway overshoot by a Dana aircraft at the airport.
