President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Turkish government to participate more in humanitarian support for the terror-ravaged northeastern Nigeria.

The North-East has endured decade-long devastation as a result of Boko Haram terrorism with over 2.1 million persons internally displaced.

Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Saturday said, Mr Buhari in a telephone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, called for more humanitarian support for North-East.

“President Buhari, who had fruitful discussions, expressed satisfaction with existing bilateral ties between the two countries and called for greater Turkish participation in the economy and the humanitarian efforts in the North-East,” Mr Shehu said.

United Nations reported that “Violence and insecurity in the region has left close to 7.7 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance – especially food, shelter, water, healthcare and protection.”

Over 20,000 persons have been killed in North-East since Boko Haram insurgents declared a war against Nigeria.

The terror group has launched attacks consistently on citizens, forcing school closure with mass abduction of students for ransom.
