Driver faces trial over alleged cheating, breach of trust

A 50-year-old driver, Ifeanyi Collins, appeared before a magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Friday over an alleged criminal breach of trust.
The police charged Mr Collins, who lives on Madam Mercy Road in Gwagwalada, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Alhaji Bilia of Zuba, Gwagwalada, Abuja, reported the matter at Gwagwalada Police Station on April 10.
Mr Yakubu said that on the same date, the defendant deceived the complainant and collected N500,000 cash for a Volkswagen Golf 3 car, claiming ownership.
He said the defendant disappeared with the money, and the car was nowhere to be found. He added that during the police investigation, he confessed to having sold the car and converted the money to his own personal use.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate, Olatunji Oladunmoye, admitted the defendant to N500,000 bail with one surety in like sum.
Mr Oladunmoye said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide a valid means of identification.
He, thereafter, adjourned the case until June 11 for a hearing.
