The remains of President Ebrahim Raisi have been sent to East Azerbaijan province for burial after the completion of a large-scale search and rescue operation following a helicopter crash on Sunday.

President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Pir Hossein Kolivand, disclosed this in a televised statement on Monday.

The president was confirmed dead on Monday after one of the helicopters which he was onboard with his entourage crashed in the Varzaqan region in the northwest province of East Azerbaijan.

Giving an update of the operation, Mr Kolivand, said the IRCS expert teams on hand on Sunday, had difficulty in their search process due to bad weather and heavy fog but managed to find the scene of the incident on Monday.

The president died on his return to Tehran from Tabriz, where he attended an opening ceremony on a joint Iran-Azerbaijan dam project.

The Iranian government also, in a statement on Monday, said he died on the birth anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam, after which it held an emergency meeting.
