EU Commission ends legal case against Poland over rule of law
On Wednesday, the European Commission formally ended its legal action against Poland for rule-of-law violations.
The commission’s decision was based on its assessment that Poland is addressing concerns about judicial independence and is committed to implementing European court judgements concerning the rule of law.
The commission initiated legal proceedings against Poland in 2017 that the then government, led by the nationalist Law and Justice Party (PiS), had compromised judicial independence.
However, a centrist coalition led by former European Council president Donald Tusk defeated the PiS in a general election on October 15.
In February, Tusk’s government presented a reform plan.
The commission announced its intention to end the legal action on May 6.
