Lagos sports commission announces new coaches, bonus scheme

Lekan Fatodu, director general of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), announced Friday the appointment of 60 new coaches across various sports disciplines.
The newly appointed coaches, chosen for their experience and successful backgrounds, are expected to significantly improve athlete performance, identify and nurture rising stars, and cultivate a culture of excellence within Lagos’ sports community.
Fatodu emphasised the initiative’s importance during a press briefing at the Lagos State Sports Commission Complex.
He welcomed the new coaches, highlighting the wealth of experience and enthusiasm they bring to Lagos sports.
The coaches will be assessed comprehensively, including competition success rates, athlete improvement, talent identification, and programme development.
“We believe in rewarding excellence and fostering an environment that supports continuous growth and innovation,” Fatodu said.
“In addition to their salaries, our best-performing coaches will be eligible for the director general’s tournament excellence bonus.”
According to Fatodu, the bonus scheme underscores the government’s desire to establish a top-tier structure for sports development.
Fatodu further confirmed the commission’s commitment to providing coaches with ongoing training and development opportunities.
He said the initiatives, including workshops, seminars, and access to cutting-edge sports science methodologies, are designed to create a robust sports ecosystem that identifies talent and empowers athletes to reach their full potential and compete at the highest levels.
Fatodu added that the appointment of the new coaches represents a significant step forward for the LSSC’s broader strategy to enhance the quality and reach of its sports programmes.
