Chinese players dominate 2024 WTT Contender Lagos opening session

Actions have kicked off in the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos, which is currently ongoing at the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. Athletes from countries across the world are competing for the $80,000 grand prize and ranking points.
The morning session on day one of the tournament featured athletes from Nigeria, South Korea, Ukraine, China, Egypt and Ghana competing in qualifying round one of the men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles events, with players from Asia, particularly China, dominating the session.
Below are the results from day one of the morning session, with Chinese players winning all the games they participated in.
Men’s singles qualifying round one
Olamide Adeyemi (Nigeria) defeated Mathew Natus (Nigeria) 3-2, Yaroslav Zhmudenko (Ukraine) defeated Emmanuel Augustine (Nigeria) 3-1, Samuel Akayade (Ghana) got a 3-1 win over Ganiyu Ashimiyu (Nigeria), and Kim Woojin (South Korea) thumped Hussein Adeoye (Nigeria) 3-0.
Ernest Quarcoo (Ghana) lost 3-2 to David Fayele (Nigeria), Kang Youde (China) thrashed Joshua Oladiran (Nigeria) 3-0, Luo Jiecheng (China) defeated Qudus Oladejo (Nigeria) 3-0, Akinwale Fagbemi (Nigeria) lost 3-0 to Ning Xiankun (China), Abdulrahaman Abdullahi (Nigeria) defeated Emmanuel Commey (Ghana) 3-2.
The all-Ghanaian tie between Richard Ofori and Israel Aklie ended 3-2 in favour of the latter. Sola Oyetayo (Nigeria) was defeated 3-2 by Mahmoud Helmy (Egypt). Fei Junhang (China) beat Olayinka Oladipupo 3-0.
Musa Mustapha (Nigeria) lost 3-2 to Mustapha Mustapha (Nigeria). Michael Yeboah (Ghana) defeated Jamiu Ayanwale (Nigeria) 3-1.
Francis Antwi (Ghana) defeated Adewale Akinyemi (Nigeria) 3-0.
Men’s double qualifying round one
The Nigerian duo of David Fayele and Qudus Oladejo were defeated 3-0 by another Nigerian duo of Ganiyu Ashimiyu and Matthew Natu. Adegoke Muizz and Augustine Emmanuel (both Nigerians) lost 3-0 to the South Korean duo of Kim Minwoo and Kim Woojin.
Mixed doubles qualifying round one
The duo of Fagbamila Akinwale and Akinyinka Kehinde (Nigerians) defeated another Nigerian duo of Natus Michael and Akinsete Adebose 3-2, Oyetayo Sola and Akpan Cecilia (Nigerians) defeated Adeoye Hussein and Rabiu Aishat (Nigerians) 3-1.
The Chinese duo of Kang Younde and Yao Zixuan dominated the Ghanaian duo of Richard Ofori and Blessing Labanti 3-0. Ashimiyu Ganiyu and Fashola Aminat (Nigerians) lost 3-0 to Solanke Azeez and Ojomu Ajoke (both Nigerians). The Chinese duo of Jiecheng and Xu Huiyao thrashed the Nigerian duo of Akanbi Rilwan and Bisola Asiaju 3-0.
The Nigerian duo of Fabunmi Matthew and Jimoh Rofiat were thrashed 3-0 by another Nigerian duo, Adegoke Muizz and Ayoola Kabirat.
