A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of six men at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Makurdi, for allegedly stealing two cows belonging to one Yusuf Sale.

The men were, Terungwa Osoja, lorluuma Koryo, kenneth Ngbakan, Saduna Bem, Atuku Terngu and Udamsue Onum who are all of Daudu village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

They were charged with criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them when the case was mentioned.

The Chief Magistrate, Kelvin Mbanongun denied them bail and adjourned the matter until August 14, for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Godwin Ato told the court that the case was reported by Sale at Daudu Police Station on June 20.

The complainant told the police that on June 19, his brother, Abdullahi informed him that his cows had scattered after controlling them back home but discovered that two cows were missing.

Sale said he immediately alerted his brothers who traced the cows to the road side, where they saw the cows with the defendants.

He said that the defendants were known for stealing cows and buying stolen cows from the Fulani Settlement at Daudu.

The prosecutor said the defendants were arrested during a police investigation while Ter, whose surname is unknown and also their member, is still at large.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 97, 289 and 318 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
