Euro 2024: Spain record historic victory against England in Berlin

Spain etched their name in history books as the most successful team in European Championship history, lifting the trophy for the fourth time with a thrilling 2-1 victory over England in the 2024 final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
England manager Gareth Southgate surprised fans with a switch to a defensive four-man backline, including a first competitive start for Luke Shaw since February.
This tactic initially held Spain’s attacking duo of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams at bay, frustrating both sides with a lack of clear chances. The first shot on target didn’t even come until the dying seconds of the first half, a comfortable save for Spain’s Unai Simón.
The tide turned dramatically after half-time. Spain suffered a blow with the loss of midfielder Rodri but emerged stronger. Within seconds of the restart, Yamal found space and set up Williams for the opening goal. England, no strangers to comebacks in this tournament, seemed rattled.
Despite chances for Dani Olmo and Álvaro Morata, a crucial save by Jordan Pickford and a stunning equaliser from substitute Cole Palmer kept England in the game.
Southgate’s substitutions once again proved pivotal, with Palmer’s strike restoring hope. The momentum shifted again as Spain, rejuvenated by Luis de la Fuente’s decision to bring on Mikel Oyarzabal, retook the lead through a close-range finish from the substitute. The Spanish defence held firm, denying England’s late aerial attacks from Stones, Guéhi, and Rice.
Spain’s resolute defence secured their historic victory. This win adds to their impressive record of five major tournament wins from six finals. England, meanwhile, are left heartbroken after suffering defeat in a second consecutive European Championship final.
