PDP chieftain dumps party over alleged embezzled Ondo campaign funds

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo has deepened as its erstwhile chairman, Ebenezer Alabi, resigned from the party.
Mr Alabi, the party’s chairman during the administration of the late former governor, Olusegun Agagu, said he made the decision after wide consultation with his family members, political associates, and friends.
In the copy of the resignation letter dated July 18, 2024, the ex-chairman explained that he could not in good conscience continue with some party leaders who aim to make financial fortunes at every circle of elections in the state.
The letter was addressed to the Ward II chairman of the PDP in Akure North LGA.
The politician said, “The large chunk of money sent for mobilization during the past general elections ended up in the private pockets of these leaders at the detriment of the party’s victory.
“Some of them found it easy to extort money from many aspirants during primary elections and ended up allocating delegates’ votes to them in the proportion of amounts coerced to cough out.”
A spokesman for the party did not immediately respond to a request for comments by Peoples Gazette.
“I came to this conclusion after wide consultations with my family members, political associates, friends and followers on the pariah state of affairs of the party in the state,” said Mr Alabi. I cannot, in good conscience, further continue to co-habit with some political leaders whose aim is to make financial fortunes at every cycle of election.”
He alleged that the party’s overall success “is none of their concern, in as much as their personal aggrandizement is satisfied.”
The disgruntled erstwhile PDP chair added, “Unfortunately, the depressing reality is that I am yet to notice any radical departure from this ugly trend, hence my decision to quit in order not to be part of further political misfortunes.
“As I take a final bow today, let me use this medium to express my deep appreciation to you and all other party members for their support, respect and cooperation accorded me for the past 21 years.”
Mr Alabi’s resignation came barely 24 hours after some leaders and members of the PDP dumped PDP for APC.
