The Adamawa government has trained finance and account officers on financial instructions (FIs) to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

The three-day training exercise is being conducted with the support of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) State2State project.

The project team lead, Suzanne Myada, stated this at the inauguration of the exercise on Saturday in Yola, the state capital.

She said the exercise would expose the participants to public financial management (PFM) to encourage prudent public finances.

“FIs are a set of financial rules or guidelines put together to direct or guide public officers and institutions on their responsibilities, powers, and financial authorities in dealing with issues of public financial management (PFM),” she said.

Ms Myada urged the participants to engage actively in the exercise and use the skills learnt to enhance effective service delivery.

Allahdon Kenan, the project specialist, said the exercise would build public financial managers’ capacity on PFM issues in the state.

A resource person, Ismail Adeleye, highlighted the importance of record-keeping and personnel capacity development in ensuring prudent public financial management.

“You have to be professional in your conduct; otherwise, you will be exposed one day. Record-keeping might serve as evidence in a court of law in case of any challenge,” he said.

Also, Hassan Modibbo, permanent secretary of the Adamawa Planning Commission, lauded USAID for its contributions to promoting good governance in the state.

Accountants, auditors and administrators from the offices of the state’s auditor general and accountant general, the State House of Assembly, and the ministries of finance and budget attended the exercise.
