Juventus, others to participate in Champions League despite Super League brush: UEFA
The Union of European Football Association, UEFA, has assured Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona of their participation in the 2021-2022 Champions League despite their involvement in the European Super League
ANSA reported that UEFA delivered the assurance via letters to the Spanish and Italian football associations to end doubts over the consequences of their continuing alignment with the Super League.
Twelve top European club sides formed the breakaway European Super League, before nine of the clubs withdrew under pressure from governing authorities and fans.
Real Madrid President Florentino Perez led the breakout which included Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan before the plan collapsed.
Many football fans saw the move as a rebellious scheme that sought to exploit the fans more financially.
Some fans took their displeasure to the streets around the clubs’ stadiums protesting against the Super League.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Barcelona and Manchester City saw their Stadiums’ streets flooded with protests against the breakaway.
Mr Perez in his defense stated that most football clubs were struggling with debts and wages as a result of economic downturn caused by the pandemic, claiming the Super League would ensure more income to save the day.
Mr Perez added that UEFA has not been properly financially audited and the clubs were making less money while the UEFA board executives were exploiting them.
The Super League teams took UEFA to the courts in Spain to ensure their players and the teams are not kicked out of FIFA and UEFA organised competitions.
UEFA President Alexander Ceferin had threatened that the Super League Clubs would have their players banned from FIFA and European Nations competitions if they went on with their plan.
The threats notwithstanding, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have remained adamant on their plans for the Super League and have refused to formally withdraw.
