Following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, some residents of Lagos are optimistic of better days for Nigeria upon his return to the White House as the country’s 47th president.

Mr Trump was declared winner of the poll after defeating his rival and Vice President, Kamala Harris.

Peoples Gazette spoke with some Lagosians on their thoughts regarding Mr Trump’s return as president of the United States of America.

A software developer, Joseph Ogunrombi, said that Mr Trump’s win was anticipated even though it was a tough contest with Ms Harris

He said, “But I think the development will most likely affect many countries including the US as a world power’. If our country has something to offer America, we should have a give and take relationship with the U.S. during Trump’s tenure.’’

Another resident and event planner, identified only as Deji, expressed excitement over Mr Trump’s victory. He stated, “America is such a powerful country and Trump winning the elections is great news because this would help to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the US. Trump is a disciplined man and being president will change the course of things in the world.”

Also, a data analyst, Austin Dike said he was happy Mr Trump won the U.S. presidential poll for the second time. The 33-year-old stated, “At least for us crypto enthusiasts and forex traders, it’s good news. Trump is a good businessman and this can favour Nigeria if we have good business to do with the US.”

For Adebayo Adeleke, Mr Trump’s victory was a step in the right direction.

The 28-year-old painter and writer said that if Mr Trump had not won, only God knew what would have happened to many things.

He said, “I know many people may really not believe it but it would have been a big problem.”

In her comment, a 40-year-old nurse, Favour Esther, said that she was really happy when she learnt of Mr Trump’s victory, describing the president-elect as a man after God’s heart and became president by God’s appointment.

Besides, 26-year-old baker and chef, Victoria Akpan, noted, “I look forward to travelling soon. I hope Trump’s victory will not affect that. But the fact that he’s trying to uphold moral standards makes him acceptable to me,’’

Besides, a trader, Katherine Ogbu, seemed to be less interested in who emerged as the U.S. president, adding that she heard a little about the presidential elections before it took place and wished that “the man with “white” hair won.

Ms Ogbu said he was told that the man (Donald Trump) was a good man.

She said, “I didn’t support the female candidate. I am a woman too but I feel that America is too big for a woman to control.”

Congratulations are pouring in for Mr Trump from world leaders including President Bola Tinubu who congratulated him on his electoral victory and expressed readiness for economic cooperation with his administration.
