Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has canvassed coordinated policies to achieve net zero by 2050.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala made this known in a meeting with other world leaders at the ongoing Conference of Parties 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan capital, on Tuesday.

“Our central message here at COP29 is that to reach net zero by 2050, we can and must leverage trade. And to do so we need policy coordination to prevent trade tensions and restrictions from slowing or stopping the pursuit of climate goals”, she shared this in a post on her X handle.

Net zero underscores an important target of completely negating the amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activity, to be achieved by reducing emissions and implementing methods of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The ongoing conference is important for countries to aggregate efforts necessary to achieve the target amid exploding climate challenges.

To this end, policymakers and business leaders are expected to strengthen partnerships to accelerate strategies required to ensure a safe and sustainable future for all.
