Lagos destroys 138 shanties where occupants pay N100,000 rent
The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) on Thursday, pulled 138 illegal shanties around the Ajao Estate canal.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said occupants of the illegal shanties pay as much as N100,000 as rent.
“The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, on Thursday, demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate Canal where illegal occupants pay between N60,000 to N100,000 rent,” Mr Wahab wrote.
A video attached to the commissioner’s postshowed the demolition at Baale Shekoni Street, Oshodi/Isolo.
The officials were seen in the video demolishing the already-marked structures while the illegal occupants evacuated their properties.
The commissioner said the operation was carried out in continuation of measures to reduce environmental infractions and illegal encampments in public spaces.
