79 injured in Germany’s football match violence
At least 79 were injured after violence broke out between two rival groups of supporters following a regional league game between FC Carl Zeiss Jena and BSG Chemie Leipzig on Saturday, police in Germany said.
According to the BBC, fans of both teams pulled down the barrier separating them before unleashing “uninhibited violence” on one another after the game, which FC Carl Zeiss Jena won 5-0.
To suppress the violence, police used tear gas and batons to break up the incident, but 64 supporters, 10 police officers and five stewards were injured.
Tension had been building up even before the game after police were forced to stop around 350 home fans that had gone marching through the city while setting off pyrotechnics, reports said.
FC Carl Zeiss Jena said it was an “unpleasant end” to the game and wished those affected “a good and quick recovery”.
An estimated 7,224 attended the Ernst-Abbe Sportfeld as the home team thumped their opponents 5-0, with fans of both teams repeatedly setting off pyrotechnics throughout the game.
