ALGON charges LG chairs on prudent management of resources

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has urged its members across the 774 local governments to activate strategies towards prudent and effective management of their resources.
The association made the call in a communiqué signed by Hamisu Mohammed, ALGON national publicity secretary and members of the communique committee at the end of its 51st National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Katsina.
”The communiqué urged members to activate strategies for effective resource management and to remain inspired by the judgment and performance appraisals of their constituents.
“The NEC promised to continue strengthening its engagement with multi-sectoral organisations, showcasing the rich economic potentials of local governments and promoting peacebuilding to attract investments and encourage income generation with service delivery,” he said.
The ALGON spokesman said the key resolutions of the meeting underscored the association’s commitment to strengthening local governance in Nigeria.
“The NEC expressed its gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support in empowering local governments to fulfil their constitutional mandates. The judiciary was also commended for its role in entrenching a viable local government system, aligning with the popular will of the masses.
“Furthermore, the NEC appreciated the efforts of state governors and the Nigeria Governors Forum in conducting elections across local government areas, with over 30 states now having democratically elected chairmen.
“The remaining states are hereby urged to follow suit so as to fully have a system that is people-oriented according to the vision of Mr President,” he said.
He said that the NEC also appreciated the governors’ uninterrupted access to ALGON members to run their local councils in the various states, ensuring the democratic dividends get to the people.
Mr Mohammed expressed NEC’s confidence in the new national president, Bello Lawal, and his executives, describing their journey as encouraging, focused, and innovative.
