The commissioner of police (CP), Delta command, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has reiterated the ban on fireworks in the state during the festive season.

Mr Abaniwonda gave the order in a statement on Thursday in Warri.

The CP directed all area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

He also urged the officers to address violations of the ban within their respective areas of responsibility.

The police boss said that the ban was part of the ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce crimes during the Yuletide.

According to him, experience has shown that criminally-minded persons can take advantage of this season to unleash terror on law-abiding citizens.

“The ban on the sale, use and display of pyrotechnics, including fireworks and firecrackers known as ‘knock-out’ and ‘banger’ is still in force and the Command will be enforcing it strictly.

“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their children and wards to desist from using these items.

“Retailers are equally warned to withdraw from the display and sale of these products, as anyone found wanting will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned.

Mr Abaniwonda appreciated the people of Delta for observing the restriction order thus far.

The CP, while wishing the people a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year, enjoined citizens to always report incidents of the sale and use of fireworks to the nearest police station.
