Fears gripped residents of Rivers State on Wednesday after a court and two police stations were set on fire by rampaging vandals, witnesses said.

The attacks were not related to the #EndSARS, witnesses said, although it came amidst rising assault on people participating in the campaign against police brutality.

A resident told Peoples Gazette that armed thugs attacked and burnt a police division and the State High Court in Oyigbo before moving to a police station in Afam to set it ablaze. Both attacks occurred between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., witnesses said.

Police officers were reportedly injured, although it was not immediately clear how many. The Gazette did not immediately confirm any casualties.

Rivers police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni did not return calls seeking comments about the attack.
