Police apprehend minors for iron rod theft in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested four minors for allegedly stealing iron from an uncompleted building in Guzape.
This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh.
The suspects, Matthew Vincent and Timothy Shedrack, both 15 and Moses Vincent and Lucky Enock, 11, were arrested following a complaint made to the Guzape Police Station by some residents.
Some residents of Guzape reported suspicious activities at the site, noting that the minors made a nightly visit to the building.
Ms Adeh said, “Witnesses described hearing loud noises and observed swift movements as the children dismantled parts of the structure. “
She further stated that preliminary investigations indicated the minors gained access to the building by scaling the fence and using crude tools to remove the iron rods, which they reportedly sold to a local scrap dealer, ‘ Babanbola’.
The police spokesperson stated that investigations were ongoing to locate ‘Babanbola’, who is believed to be involved in a broader network that facilitates the theft and sale of construction materials in the area.
This incident highlights “the growing concern of juvenile delinquency in the Federal Capital Territory,” Ms Adeh added.
The Commissioner of Police FCT, Olatunji Disu, urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities, especially during late hours, advising business owners and scrap dealers to verify the sources of materials before purchasing them.
“The minors will be moved to juvenile homes for rehabilitation, and those found culpable will face legal consequences,” Ms Adeh noted.
