Christopher Maikalangu, chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), on Tuesday presented a 2025 budget proposal of N25.651 billion before the legislative council.

Mr Maikalangu said that while preparing the budget tagged “Budget for Sustainable Development”, the council carefully adopted the “zero-based budgeting method” to enable departments to justify their expenditure for the new fiscal year.

According to the chairman, the method was adopted to eliminate unnecessary and wasteful expenditures.

“This approach is duly articulated to rhyme with our policy thrust in providing quality education, healthcare, aggressive grassroots development, total empowerment, and consolidation in the ongoing projects,” he said.

He said the council had allocated over half of the 2025 budget to capital projects, with a special focus on completing ongoing projects.

“This is with the commitment to ensure that the 12 wards which make up the council are equitably serviced with the vision,

“The breakdown of the budget shows that N11.857 billion, representing 46.23 per cent, is for the recurrent expenditure, while N13.793 billion, representing 53.77 per cent, is for capital expenditure,” he said.

The AMAC boss said the 2025 budget was expected to make a more positive impact and to deliver on the campaign promises.

Responding, Mathew Yare, speaker of the AMAC Legislative Council, said the budget presentation had also created a moment of reflection on Mr Maikalangu’s achievements for the people of AMAC.

“This moment is not only a milestone in our collective journey towards sustainable development but also an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous successes recorded by the chairman.

“The 2025 budget is the blueprint for the future of our people and the council because it has been carefully crafted to meet the needs of our diverse populations and communities in AMAC,” he said.

He assured the chairman of the speedy passage of the budget to achieve more dividends of democracy within AMAC.
