GAC endorses new Lagos Speaker Meranda

The newly elected Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has been endorsed by the state Governor’s Advisory Council following the sudden ouster of the erstwhile Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over fraud allegations and gross abuse of power.
Ms Meranda took charge of the leadership of the assembly on Monday after almost all the lawmakers endorsed Mr Obasa’s impeachment, insisting that it was an inevitable decision to protect the assembly’s integrity.
Ms Meranda, who addressed journalists during her visit to members of the council on Tuesday, said she came to seek their blessings and brief the council about the latest development in the assembly.
“I am here to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday, to seek their blessings which we have gotten,” Ms Meranda said,
The GAC is the highest decision-making body in the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos. It was formed and headed by the party’s National Leader, President Bola Tinubu, consisting of major stakeholders of the party within the state who oversee the affairs of the party.
Meanwhile, Ms Meranda’s endorsement by GAC came after an aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gbenga Akosile, denied the governor’s involvement in Mr Obasa’s impeachment.
Mr Akosile stated that Mr Sanwo-Olu was more concerned about serious governance issues that would impact the lives of teeming Lagosians, adding Mr Obasa’s impeachment was purely a legislative matter.
