Many in the U.S. are now downloading Xiaohongshu, also known as the Red Note app, ahead of the potential TikTok ban on January 19.

The ban is supposed to take effect if the app’s parent company, ByteDance, refuses to sell their ownership.

Many users who earn a living from TikTok and those who spend hours scrolling and enjoying the content are unhappy about the ban and have found an alternative to stay connected.

The concern of the U.S. government against TikTok is to counter China’s efforts to collect Americans’ data. However, American users are now running Red Note, a Chinese-owned app.

The Red Note app allows users to share content in videos, photos, and texts like TikTok. It has been active since 2013, and although it was the first online shopping guide app before moving into social media, it has over 300 million users.

The app is predominantly in Chinese, however, there are translation tools, and many have taken it as a task to find ways to translate and enjoy the app better.

American users are calling themselves ‘TikTok refugees’ on the app and Chinese users on the app are making fun of Americans with comments like “Give me your data, I’m a Chinese spy.”

Some Nigerian TikTok users are also migrating to the Red Note app, seeing that most of their favourite creators are in the U.S.

One user said, “Me in Nigeria following Americans to the Red Note app because my fyp is going to be boring without them.”
