The National Mushroom Growers, Processors, Marketers Association of Nigeria (NAM-GP-NAM) has called for funding support from the federal government to boost production and the industry’s market share.

The president of NAM-GP-NAM, Michael Awunor, disclosed this on Friday in Lagos.

Mr Awunor said the government’s support would help the industry to reach its full potential and overcome its current challenges.

He said that mushroom potential, if properly harnessed, would boost food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural economic development.

“However, despite its many benefits, the industry is still faced with significant challenges such as limited access to credit, lack of awareness and education, cultural and traditional beliefs, and limited availability.

“Many Nigerians are not familiar with the different types of mushrooms, their nutritional benefits, and how to prepare them safely. This lack of knowledge can lead to fear and mistrust.

“In some cultures, mushrooms are believed to be poisonous or associated with witchcraft. These traditional beliefs can influence people’s perception and attitude towards mushrooms.

“The best pizzas are made with mushrooms, and the best soup you will ever enjoy at a five-star hotel is a mushroom soup,” he said.

He said that the association needs dedicated funding support from the government to overcome these challenges; the association needs dedicated funding support from the government.

“This would enable the industry to conduct critical research and development, educate consumers, and create awareness about the nutritional benefits of mushrooms.

“The association believes that developing and implementing effective marketing strategies to promote mushroom consumption and increase demand is important,” he said.

He added that proper funding would enable mushroom growers to upgrade their infrastructure to improve efficiency and increase production.

“It is important to know that mushroom growing is an agricultural sector that cannot be overlooked, as it possesses many economic and environmental benefits,” Mr Awunor said.
