Delta police arrest mother for selling six-week-old baby

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a mother at the Ekpan divisional headquarters in Uvwie Local Government Area for selling her six-week-old baby to a couple at N200,000.
In a post on his X handle on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the suspect sold the baby after lying to her boyfriend that the child had died and had been buried.
Mr Edafe said, “This was a female suspect we paraded at Ekpan, Delta State. She lied to her boyfriend and father of her six-week-old child that the child had died.
“She then approached a couple and lied to them that she was ganged raped by four men, and she got pregnant. She then sold the child for the sum of N200,000.”
Attached to Mr Edafe’s post is a video of the interrogation of the suspect, simply identified as Tega, who confirmed that the child is “one month and two weeks” old.
“I lied to him that the child is dead. I gave the child out. I lied to them (the couple) that I was raped and got pregnant by four people so that they can take the child away from me. I was afraid that the child may die in my hands,” she said.
She claimed the baby’s father was not capable of taking care of the child, adding that it did not cross her mind to report to the police.
Mr Edafe said the suspect will be charged to court, adding that her new determination to care for the child is not for the police to decide.
