NCC approves fifty per cent tariff increase for telcos
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a 50 per cent tariff hike for telecommunications companies in the country.
In a statement on Monday, the NCC announced that it “will be granting approval for tariff adjustment requests by Network Operators in response to prevailing market conditions.”
“The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability,” the NCC said.
According to the NCC, these adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.
This follows a push by telecommunications companies for an upward review of their tariffs in order to stay afloat amid rising inflation.
The 50 per cent tariff hike for telecommunications companies comes amid an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis rocking Nigeria.
With inflation at over 34 per cent, Nigerians have experienced more than a 100 per cent increase in food prices since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, scrapping fuel subsidy and floating the naira.
