Swedish Prime Minister resigns after parliament passed vote of no confidence on him
Stefan Löfven, Sweden Prime Minister, on Monday resigned following a vote of no confidence passed on him.
Mr Löfven resignation comes a week after a vote of no confidence was passed on him on June 21.
“I have requested to be dismissed as prime minister,” Mr Löfven said in press conference on Monday, adding that “It is the most difficult political decision I have ever taken.”
Mr Löfven handed over to the Swedish Parliament speaker, asking him carry on with proposing a new Prime Minister.
“The speaker will now begin work on proposing a prime minister who can be tolerated by the Riksdag [the assembly],” Mr Löfven said. “The government will continue to govern the country for now but as the caretaking government.”
Mr Löfven becomes Swedish first ever Prime minister to lose a vote of no confidence. He has been the leader of the Social Party and Democrat Sweden’s Prime minister sicen 2014.
