Five men were on Thursday, arraigned before an Ago- Iwoye Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly assaulting a secondary school teacher, one Mr Akeem Soyingbe.

The defendants, Sunday Matthew (19), Salisu Sulaiman (32), Ojenugba Philips (34), Sunday Abu (45) and Joel Sunday (20) are facing a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy and  assault.

They however, pleaded not guilty to the six count charge preferred against them.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Abolarinwa Wasiu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on January 29 at Mamu Community Comprehensive High School, Ago Iwoye.

Wasiu said that the defendants conspired among themselves to assault Soyingbe.

He further explained that the defendants came to the school to assault the teacher, having allegedly failed an SS 1 student of the school.

He said, “The defendants came into the school premises with motorcycles and assaulted one Mr Akeem Soyingbe, a teacher. They claimed he was responsible for Mathew’s low grades in his academics and for failing Mathew.  The act displayed by the defendants yesterday has created fear and anxiety in other students, thereby resulting to poor students’ attendance in school today.’’

However, the Magistrate, O. F. Adeduntan granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

Mrs Adeduntan also ordered that the sureties must show evidence of two years tax payment to the Ogun State government.

She thereafter adjourned the case until February 27 for hearing.
