Manchester City climbed back into the Premier League’s top-four with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, avoiding what would have been a third defeat of the season to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Despite being reigning champions, City’s recent struggles meant their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at the Etihad last weekend came as little surprise. That setback also dented their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes, making this clash even more crucial—especially after Chelsea’s emphatic 4-0 win over Southampton had temporarily pushed them out of the top four. 

Determined to respond, City dominated the first-half and could have put the game beyond doubt before the break.

Erling Haaland eventually broke the deadlock, tapping in after fine work from Jérémy Doku. However, the Norwegian had earlier seen one shot saved by Guglielmo Vicario and squandered an even clearer opportunity from close range. 

Doku also tested the Spurs goalkeeper with a low drive, but the most glaring miss belonged to Savinho, who blazed over from just eight yards after being picked out at the back post. 

Tottenham, meanwhile, struggled to create chances, with their only real first-half effort coming just before half-time when Kevin Danso’s header was tipped over by Ederson.

The second-half saw a shift in momentum, as Spurs took control and began posing a greater threat—particularly from set-pieces. Ederson was called into action to hold headers from Danso and Rodrigo Bentancur before Pedro Porro sent another effort over the bar. 

The best opportunity fell to Wilson Odobert, who failed to convert from Porro’s cross when he only needed to guide the ball on target.

As Tottenham’s intensity faded, City regained control, though they still needed Ederson to deny Son Heung-min’s first-time strike. A stoppage-time goal for the visitors was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check. 

With 11 games left, City now sit one point above fifth-placed Chelsea, while Spurs remain in 13th. Despite the defeat, Postecoglou can take encouragement from his side’s spirited display, hoping it strengthens rather than undermines the confidence of his young squad.
