A former vice president Atiku Abubakar has said allegations of sexual harassment levelled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan should be investigated.

Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central, had, in an interview on Arise TV, accused Mr Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he repeatedly blocked her motions, especially on the corruption relating to Ajaokuta Steel from being heard on the floor of the Senate because she rejected his sexual advances.

The lawmaker also accused Mr Akpabio of making sexual advances towards her during a visit to his country home in Akwa Ibom, detailing the incident that took place a day before her birthday.

In a statement on Friday, Mr Abubakar described the allegations as grave, adding they should be impartially and transparently investigated.

“Like millions of Nigerians, I watched with deep concern this morning as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation,” Mr Abubakar noted.

The politician further stressed that “the Senate represents the voice of the people, stating the need for it “to uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect, both for their office and for the Nigerian citizens they serve.”

“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility,” he added.

Mr Abubakar urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the allegations seriously, emphasising the need to foster a safe and inclusive environment for female legislators.

“The handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance. With only four women currently serving in the Senate, it is imperative that we foster an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation,” the politician stressed.
