Meranda returns as Lagos assembly deputy speaker

Mojisola Meranda was, on Monday, re-elected as the deputy speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after stepping down as speaker.
Mrs Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, announced her resignation earlier during plenary, paving the way for fellow lawmakers to re-elect Mudashiru Obasa to take over as speaker.
“This is a notice of resignation as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Mrs Meranda said when she read out her resignation letter.
Mrs Meranda explained that her reason for resigning as speaker was to protect the institution of the assembly and pledged to serve the state in good faith.
The lawmakers commended her strength, humility and obedience to the rules and regulations of the All Progressives Congress while also appreciating her for maintaining peace in the assembly during her short time as speaker.
Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai, representing Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I, who also resigned, was re-elected as the chief whip.
Also, the chief whip, Setonji David, representing Badagry Constituency II, resigned and was re-elected as the deputy chief whip, prompting Okanlawon Sanni, representing Kosofe Constituency I, to resign.
The development came after a meeting with leaders of the APC to solve the seven-week-old crisis that started with the impeachment of Mr Obasa over corruption allegations.
