The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has decried the incessant attacks on its power installations across the states within the South-East.

The EEDC’s spokesperson, Emeka Ezeh, said that two suspected power installation vandals were again arrested in Aniocha Local Government Area of Anambra on July 1.

“The suspects were both arrested by Akwaeze vigilante team for attacking Magbuwa-2 Distribution Sub-station of EEDC, located in Akwaeze Village, Aniocha Local Government Area,” he said.

The EEDC spokesman said that also recovered from suspects were the vandalised items and a Nissan bus used for the operation.

“The increasing rate of attacks on our facilities has become a source of worry for us as an organisation.

“It is even more worrisome that despite the series of arrests and convictions, these vandals are bent on perpetrating their heinous acts, affecting our operations and inconveniencing our customers,” he said.

According to Ezeh, the recent attack on the substation is one out of so many that had taken place within the EEDC network in the past two months.

“Almost daily our substations are attacked and this has caused a retrogression in the quality of service delivery to our customers,” he said.

He appealed to customers to adopt an ownership attitude towards power installations sited within their environment.

“The fight against vandalism is a collective effort of both customers and the EEDC. It can only be achieved if all hands are on deck,” he said.

In May 2021, activities of vandals resulted in a power outage for some time in over 50 communities in Enugu and Ebonyi States following the attack on Amechi-Agwu 33KV mainline.
