The National Youth Council of Nigeria has declared support for young individuals vying for chairmanship and councillorship in the forthcoming local government elections in Lagos.

The support was declared in a statement signed by its chairman, Adigun Olalekan.

Mr Olalekan said the association observed with delight how youths across the state had taken advantage of the political opportunity the #NotTooYoungToRun law opened up by stepping out to contest.

He said the body remains a non-partisan organisation but saw the need to rally behind broader youth constituencies who step into the political arena to contribute to governance.

“Youth participation in politics and governance is crucial to achieving a more inclusive, innovative, and progressive society. We believe that the future of governance lies in the hands of competent, visionary leaders who are ready to bring fresh ideas and energy into the system.

“The 2025 LG polls present an opportunity for youths to demonstrate leadership capacity and commitment to grassroots development,” he said.

He urged all political parties to provide a level playing field for young aspirants and appealed to eligible voters, especially youths, to actively support and vote for candidates who show dedication to service, accountability, and community development.

He also called on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to uphold its mandate by ensuring free, fair and credible elections.

According to him, as the election approaches, the council would also organise sensitisation and voter education programmes to ensure massive youth participation and to promote peaceful, free, and credible elections across the state.
