Unidentified vandals invaded the University of Calabar on Saturday, breaking into banks and an ICT facility to cart away an unknown amount of cash and education equipment.

The school’s publishing house was also looted before campus security was able to respond and chase away most of the looters. No one was immediately arrested, witnesses and campus officials said.

The attack occurred about the same time that the residences of Senator Gershom Bassey and Victor Ndoma-Egba were looted before one of them was set on fire. The looting was caught on camera and shared on social media.

On Friday, a warehouse holding coronavirus pandemic relief materials was breached in Calabar by residents, who promptly emptied it before moving on to other public and private facilities to carry out additional loot.

Other parts of the country have witnessed a surge in mob activities, which came after residents discovered a warehouse of COVID-19 palliatives in Mazamaza, Lagos.

Witnesses and video clips also confirmed looting of warehouses in Jos, Ilorin, Ado-Ekiti, Ibadan and Ede.

Politicians have been accused of hoarding the donated supplies with intention to resell them at a later time for financial gains.

In Osun, officials said the items were not kept away by those with intention to resell them later, but distribution to residents was delayed because of a lack of approval from Abuja. A state official warned in Ekiti that some of the looted items were poisonous.
