Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has announced today that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, ending his two-decade journey with the Merseyside club.

The 26-year-old right-back announced a heartfelt message shared on social media.

Alexander-Arnold, widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s most influential academy graduates, is reportedly set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. The decision, he said, stems from a desire to step outside his comfort zone and embrace a new challenge.

“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season,” Alexander-Arnold said in a statement. “This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”

His departure comes despite earlier contract talks between the player and the club. Alexander-Arnold was part of a trio — alongside Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk — whose contracts were due to expire this summer. While Salah and Van Dijk opted to extend their stays, Alexander-Arnold chose a different path.

The England international has been a fixture at Liverpool since joining the academy as a child, progressing through the ranks to become a vital part of Jürgen Klopp’s side. Since his first-team debut in 2016, Alexander-Arnold has made 352 appearances and won numerous honours, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League.

“This club has been my whole life — my whole world – for 20 years. From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.

“But, I have never known anything else, and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally. I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here,” stated the player.

Alexander-Arnold’s time at Liverpool has been marked by success. Along with domestic league triumphs, he played a key role in the club’s victories in the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and Community Shield.
