Sokoto: AGILE coordinator warns SBMCs against shoddy projects

Mansur Isah-Buhari, the Sokoto coordinator of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, has warned School-Based Management Committees against executing substandard projects.
Mr Isah-Buhari gave the warning when he led a delegation on assessment of ongoing project sites in Gwadabawa and Kware LGAs.
The coordinator expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing construction of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities at some schools, flouting standards, specifications, and agreements.
He said the projects were part of implementing the School Improvement Grant in 240 Schools across the 23 LGAs of Sokoto.
Mr Isah-Buhari added that the project’s successes would be based on the quality and coordination of the execution of good work. He said Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s administration in Sokoto state was committed to ensuring that all projects and services meet World Bank standards.
The coordinator explained that some anomalies were observed at Romon Sarki Junior Secondary School and others in the Tambuwal LGAs. Providers were immediately stopped until quality regularisation was ensured.
Mr Isah-Buhari had earlier expressed satisfaction over the quality of work at Government Girls Day Secondary, Women Development and Training Centre in Tambuwal, along with Government Day Secondary School, Dogon Daji and Government Day Secondary School, Madorawa in Bodinga LGA.
The team also visited schools in Sokoto South and Sokoto North LGAs, where some service providers were also ordered to readjust or reconstruct the facilities.
Mr Isah-Buhari said some flouted specifications bordered on using substandard materials, irregular placement of toilets between male and female students, and poor location of borehole and water supply facilities.
He noted that the project aimed to boost school enrolments by providing habitable WASH facilities, classes and other educational materials.
