Trump congratulates Pope Leo XIV, expresses eagerness to meet new pontiff

American President Donald Trump has congratulated new Pope Leo XIV, saying he looks forward to meeting the new pontiff.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Mr Trump said on social media on Thursday.
The American president said the emergence of Pope Leo XIV as the first American Pope is an honour for the country.
“It is such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!,” Mr Trump said.
Known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the new pontiff took the name Leo XIV after his emergence as the successor to the late Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
Pope Leo XIV is the 267th Catholic pontiff and the first American to lead the Church. Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, the 68-year-old pontiff was made a cardinal by Pope Francis two years ago, on September 30, 2023.
