Barcelona clinch La Liga title with derby win over Espanyol

Barcelona have officially secured the 2024/25 LaLiga title after a composed 2-0 victory over city rivals Espanyol on Thursday, giving the Blaugrana an unassailable lead at the top of the table with two matches still to play.
With the win, Barça moved to 85 points — seven ahead of Real Madrid — ensuring that even if Los Blancos win their remaining games, they’ll still fall just short of their rivals.
The triumph marks Barcelona’s 28th top-flight league crown and their second LaLiga title in three seasons. Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, the Catalan side has registered 27 victories from 36 matches, with just five defeats in a consistently dominant campaign.
This title charge has been powered by a balanced blend of youth and experience.
Raphinha, currently among the frontrunners in the Ballon d’Or race, has played a talismanic role, while emerging stars like Lamine Yamal and Pedri have lit up the league with their creativity and fearlessness.
Veteran forward Robert Lewandowski has also been instrumental, netting 25 goals in LaLiga. Supporting contributions from Ferran Torres (10 goals) and Dani Olmo (nine) have further strengthened Barça’s attack.
The path to the title has not been without challenges. Barcelona lost goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to a season-ending injury in September, while defenders Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araújo were sidelined for long spells.
In response, Flick turned to youth — 18-year-old Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Martín stepped up admirably to reinforce the backline.
This LaLiga title is Barcelona’s third trophy of the season, following their triumphs over Real Madrid in both the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
The domestic treble is a remarkable feat in Flick’s first full season in charge.
Considering the adversity they have overcome and the stylish football they’ve played, this campaign will be remembered as a landmark achievement for the Catalan giants.
