Vietnamese lawmakers on Tuesday said it proposed tougher prison sentences for certain environmental crimes, drug-related offences and violations of food safety regulations.

The Vietnam News Agency reported that the proposals were made during the National Assembly’s discussions on a draft revision of the Penal Code in capital Hanoi.

According to the report, the amendments aim to strengthen deterrence and enhance the effectiveness of crime prevention and control.

Hoang Thanh Tung, chairman of the assembly’s Committee on Legal and Judicial Affairs, proposed doubling monetary fines for environmental offences and crimes that threaten public safety and order.

He added that the draft law should further require offenders to take responsibility for remedying the consequences of their actions.
