Man arraigned for assaulting police officers on duty

A 38-year-old man, Suleiman Olapade, who allegedly assaulted two police officers on Friday, appeared before the Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The defendant was arraigned on a two-count charge of causing breach of peace and assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp Esther Adesulu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 15 in the Abule Ado area of Ojo.
Ms Adesulu said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace by engaging hoodlums to fight two police officers on duty in the area.
She stated that following a disagreement, the defendant resorted to assaulting the police officers – ASP Abigail Igbodo and Spy Sgt. Emeka Nwanmeme – and obstructing the performance of their lawful duties.
Ms Adesulu said the defendant collected handcuffs from the officers and used the same to inflict injury on them.
She further stated that Mr Olapade tore Mr Nwanmeme’s uniform while performing his lawful duty.
According to her, the offences contravene sections 168 and 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The magistrate, Funke Ogun, granted the defendant a N100,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.
Ms Ogun adjourned the case until June 2 for mention.
