Residents of Mbayion community and surrounding areas in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State have commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for embarking on flood relief projects in the area

The community members gave the commendation during an inspection tour of projects executed by the governor to mark his administration’s two years in office.

The tour was led by a former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku and a former Director-General of National Orientation Agency, Dr Mike Omeri.

The community members described the road and bridge projects in the area as major relief from years of flooding and poor infrastructure that had left them isolated, especially during the rainy season.

A community leader, Dr Emmanuel Kor, recounted the difficulties faced by residents before the intervention.

He said, “Last year around this time, we couldn’t cross this area due to flooding. Students, worshippers, and small children were all trapped. We lost some students to flooding while they were trying to cross over to attend school. Today, we are grateful to Governor Alia for coming to our aid.’’

Mr Kor also appealed to the government to consider extending the drainage system to further mitigate flooding in the area.

Similarly, Rev. Fr. Inenger Emmanuel of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tsaradi, lauded the state government for addressing the community’s longstanding need.

He stated. “I once met the governor during an ordination and told him about the suffering caused by the collapsed bridge. He promised, not just to construct the bridge, but also to tar the road. Today, that promise is being fulfilled. Our governor is working, not only for us here, but for the entire state. He has truly proven himself as a leader committed to grassroots development.’’

A resident of the area, Christina Moji, appreciated the government’s response after years of neglect.

“For many years, we were cut off. Going to the market, church, or school was a nightmare. But today, the community is coming alive again,” she said.

Head Girl of Global Academy School, Shakwa-anwando Happiness, said the project had eased access to education for pupils.

She said, “It was very difficult to reach school before, but since the construction began, we can now cross without stress. We thank Gov. Alia for this.’’’

Acting Director of Engineering Services in the Office of the Governor, Hembadoon Nongo, provided technical details of the project.

She said the bridge and culverts had completely cut off the community before the intervention.

She noted that the road clearing had been completed, and asphalt overlay was ongoing.

Mrs Niongo said, “When completed, the project will significantly boost economic and social activities. The market, church, and schools in the area will all benefit from improved access.’’
