Commissioner decries sanitary conditions at UniCal hostels

Moses Osogi, commissioner for environment in Cross River, has decried the deplorable sanitary conditions at both the male and female hostels of the University of Calabar (UniCal).
Mr Osogi made his concerns known during his visit to the hostels as part of inspection activities of the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation in Cross River.
The commissioner, who described the uncleanliness of the hostels as appalling, noted that the institution was falling short in its environmental practices.
He emphasised that the state government was ready to support the institution in improving living conditions for students.
However, in his overall assessment of the sanitation exercise compliance in the month of May, he rated the exercise as high and impressive.
According to him, in spite of the break experienced last month due to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), he is pleased with the compliance level in the metropolis.
Reacting to the challenges of waste management in the state, Mr Osogi commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the waste intervention initiative in the state.
He urged residents in need of receptacles to apply for the bins as they were intended for the benefit of the public, for effective waste evacuation in the state.
