Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has appealed to the Nasarawa State government for inclusive infrastructure in public buildings to enable its members to have easy access.

Asaba Averson, Nasarawa State coordinator of AWWDI, made the call at a press conference on Monday in Lafia.

The coordinator said Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) were facing problems in accessing public spaces, services, and opportunities.

She said the barriers had hindered them from fully participating in society’s activities and urged that urgent action be taken to enable them to achieve their full potential.

Ms Averson specifically mentioned that the government and private sector should provide ramps and elevators, wide wheelchairs, accessibility doors and pathways, as well as accessible restrooms with grab bars and lowered sinks.

“They should also provide tactile signals and braille labels for the visually impaired, audio signals at crosswalks, and a sign language interpreter at public events,” she added.

The AWWDI coordinator also emphasised that the government should organise disability awareness training for staff to enable them to attend to PWDs respectfully.

She said the government and other stakeholders should prioritise accessibility and implement policies that promote inclusiveness, equality, and human rights for all citizens regardless of ability or otherwise.

Ms Averson further called for an inclusive transportation system, healthcare services, and involvement of their members in the decision-making process to give them a sense of belonging.

“If all these are considered and implemented, the state will foster a more inclusive and equitable society and unlock our potential to enable us to contribute to the development of the state,” she said.

The coordinator further pledged to continue advocating for the rights of women and girls with disabilities in line with the mandate of their organisation.
