Poland manager Michal Probierz quits after captaincy row with Barcelona striker

Poland Coach Michal Probierz has announced his resignation from the country’s national team after a row with Barcelona striker and Poland captain, Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski, 36, a few days ago announced his retirement from the national team after reportedly being relieved of the team captaincy by Probierz who intended to pass it to Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
The prolific talisman, who is currently Poland’s highest goal scorer with 85 goals in 158 campaigns did not take the news well as he vowed never to play for the Poland national team again as long as Probierz remained coach.
He said, “Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he (Probierz) remains in charge. I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world.”
However, Poland FA in a statement on Thursday announced that Probierz who had been the coach of Poland’s national team since 2023, has stepped down from the position.
Probierz in the statement said, “I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach. Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour of my life.”
Probierz thanked the players and fans of his former team, promising to keep his fingers crossed for the national team.
“I would like to thank all the footballers whom I had the pleasure of meeting on this path. I will keep my fingers crossed for all of you, because the national team is our common national asset.” Probierz said.
He added, “I would also like to thank our wonderful fans. You are with us through thick and thin. Wherever the national team played, your support was heard.”
The Polish FA also added that they would “like to thank coach Michal Probierz for his cooperation and commitment in managing the national team, wishing him success in his future professional career.”
