Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has accused President Bola Tinubu of supporting the annulment of June 12 presidential election by the military despot, Ibrahim Babangida.

“He was part of those who supported IBB’s annulment of the June 12 election,” said Mr Lamido in an interview aired on Arise TV on Saturday. “His own mother Hajia Mogaji was organising Lagos market women to come to Abuja to pledge support for Babangida.”

The former governor said that he was entertained by the way the president’s recent June 12, accusing Mr Tinubu of dramatising his role in Nigeria’s democracy.

He said, “I feel highly entertained by Tinubu’s rhetoric, the way he’s dramatising his role in Nigeria’s democracy. Tinubu became relevant and noticeable after Abacha took over the government; before then, he was in the Senate while he was the secretary of the party.’’

Mr Lamido further alleged the National Democratic Coalition, formed in 1994, was to fight Sani Abacha’s regime, rather than advocate for the validation of the June 12 election.

“Tinubu was actively hand-in-glove with Babangida. NADECO was a postulation formation to fight Abacha not for June 12,” the former governor added.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, did not respond to a request seeking his comment on Mr Lamido’s accusation.

Meanwhile, Mr Tinubu recently honoured some heroes and heroines of democracy, acknowledging their sacrifices in the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country.

Among those honoured are the late Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late Moshood Abiola, National Electoral Commission, Humphrey Nwosu, Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and a former vice president, Shehu Yar’Adua.
