Presidency has accused opposition politician, Peter Obi of Labour Party, of weaponising everything under the sun – widespread killings, rising poverty and holidaying abroad – in criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s government.

“This (latest statement from the presidency) is for Peter Obi, whose opposition strategy appears to be focused on weaponising everything under the sun, persistently challenging President Tinubu’s every initiative and move, regardless of merit, equating constant criticism with effective opposition,” presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, said in a post on X on Sunday.

Mr Onanuga made this statement in reference to Mr Obi’s criticism of Mr Tinubu’s travel to St Lucia and the presidency’s explanation regarding the trip.

Mr Onanuga made this statement referri Mr Obi to presidency’s response to the Labour Party chieftain’s criticisms against Mr Tinubu’s holiday trip to St Lucia.

Mr Obi, had in a statement on Saturday, condemned Mr Tinubu for jetting abroad for vacation amid mass killings and unprecedented hunger in the country.

In recent times, Mr Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election against Mr Tinubu, has been vocal, lamenting widespread killings,  cost of living crisis and rising poverty under M Tinubu’s watch.

On June 22, Mr Obi berated Mr Tinubu of watching Nigeria become killing field and a corruption hub, demarketing and scaring away foreign investors from the country.

Lamenting waves of killings in Borno, Benue, Plateau, and Kebbi States, Mr Obi said “An administration that continuously allows insecurity and other vices to thrive is doing a grave disservice to the nation.

“The world is watching. People see these killings and corruption all over the system. Allowing these insecurities and corruption to continue is the real demarketing of the country.”

Amnesty International also reported that over 10,000 people have been killed in different coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and bandits across Nigeria since Mr Tinubu assumed office as president two years ago.
